Chasing the light together, living a colorful life

2026-05-20

On the campus of Wuhan University of Technology, there is a special pair of doctoral students who are engaged in research. Huang Ying, from Ningxia, is 31 years old this year. At the age of two, she lost her sight due to a high fever. She is the first visually impaired student in China to participate in the regular college entrance examination and enter a key university. She has won honors such as the 7th National Self Strengthening Model and the 2026 New Era Youth Pioneer Award. The other person is Luan Chemeng, a 34 year old roommate of Huang Ying from Beijing. In 2022, Huang Ying and Luan Chemeng were both admitted to the doctoral program in Management Science and Engineering at the School of Safety Science and Emergency Management, Wuhan University of Technology, becoming classmates and roommates. A sincere way of getting along is more comfortable than any deliberate care. "Reporter: How did the two meet? What kind of mindset did you have when making friends? Luan Chemeng: In April 2022, before the doctoral entrance examination, we met for the first time in the office of our later doctoral supervisor, which was also my first close encounter with visually impaired individuals. I thought at the time, how can I study when the entrance exam is so difficult and Huang Ying can't see? How to conduct research? The difficulty of passing the exam must be very high. Later, I learned that she had passed the exam, and I admired her from the bottom of my heart. That's how we became classmates. Before the start of school, the counselor called me and asked if I was willing to be roommates with Huang Ying. I agreed with a spirit of dedication. Huang Ying: I have always had a calm heart. I have been living in a boarding school since elementary school, so I can do laundry, make blankets, and clean by myself. Although I can't see with my eyes, I don't feel like I need special care. At that time, I was thinking about how to tell my new roommate Mengmeng that I could do many things on my own. But after repeated persuasion from the counselor, I ultimately accepted her arrangement and gained this wonderful friendship. Reporter: How did you get along from strangers to acquaintances? Luan Che Meng: At first, I was prepared to take care of everything, thinking that I would take her on a walk and help her manage her life. Who knew that on the first day I moved into the dormitory, she had already tidied up the room in advance, folding clothes neatly, completely different from what I had imagined. At the beginning of our relationship, I would be cautious and afraid of saying the wrong thing. Later on, I gradually realized that what I could do was to provide "help as needed", such as when a blind cane fell off, she would directly say "help me pick it up". Friendship is a flower blooming above equality, and in my heart, it is not special. Huang Ying: I don't think a cautious friendship will last long. I don't need the feeling of being taken care of all the time. I told Mengmeng that I can do anything except not see, and she really listened. For example, when we go to the cafeteria together, she will describe the types of food, but I have to do everything myself, such as cooking and serving dishes. She also takes me boating, shopping, and even asks me to go to the cafeteria to help her bring food. This sincere way of getting along is more comfortable than any deliberate care. Reporter: Will there be a psychological burden to ask Huang Ying to help bring food? Luan Che Meng: It's normal for roommates to bring food to each other, and I often bring food for her as well. And she is very familiar with the way to the cafeteria, and the cafeteria staff take good care of her. I am very calm about this matter. Reporter: For Huang Ying, how can she find a comfortable boundary when interacting with others, without feeling offended or worrying about saying the wrong thing? Huang Ying: I think communication is very important. When I feel offended, I will directly express "I am not comfortable" and "I don't want you to talk to me like this in the future". Sincere and truthful expression is the most comfortable way for me to get along with my friends. Reporter: In daily life, do you actively seek help from others? Do you have a mentality of 'not wanting to trouble others'? Huang Ying: When I travel, I often ask passersby for help. The cane can help me avoid obstacles, and the navigation can give me directions, but it may be difficult to find a specific store or gate. At first, every time I asked for help, I had to do a long period of psychological construction, but everyone's positive feedback gave me a lot of confidence. Mutual understanding is also a form of integration. Reporter: What are your respective strengths in academic research and daily life? How to help each other and improve together? Huang Ying: I have a more introverted personality and am also more attentive. In daily learning, I pay more attention to details and remind Mengmeng to grasp the rhythm, urging her to complete tasks in a timely manner. She has a very enthusiastic personality and always infects me with her cheerful laughter, taking me to try various experiences. I am more focused on listening, and whenever she is unhappy, I will listen carefully to her confide. Luan Che Meng: I deeply understand this. When I am heartbroken or under a lot of pressure, she can quietly listen to me from beginning to end, and this feeling of being accompanied is very happy. Although she does not perceive color through visual perception, her pursuit of beauty is no less than others. She had previously learned makeup from a teacher, and when buying clothes, she would touch the fabric and select the style and color based on my description. When she applied lipstick, if she moved her hand and missed the mark, she would ask me to help adjust it. Her love for life deeply touched me. Reporter: Now you have accumulated over 2.6 million followers on social media platforms, and the total number of video views has reached 2.8 billion. What is the opportunity for you to become self media? Huang Ying: In my growth process, many people have provided me with support and help. I hope to showcase real life through self media, change people's understanding of the visually impaired group, and spread positive energy. At the same time, I also hope to convey everyone's love and care for me to more people. We often receive private messages expressing gratitude and giving us suggestions. A netizen named "Xiao La" told us that she was under a lot of pressure when writing her master's thesis. Later, after watching our video, she regained her confidence and successfully completed the thesis. This feedback makes us feel that being a self media is particularly meaningful. Reporter: Your self media platform is also a window to showcase "integrated education". In your opinion, how can we better promote the integrated development of people with disabilities? Luan Chemeng: For friends who follow our self media, there are both able-bodied and disabled people. We want to use the lens to help able-bodied people have a better understanding of the lives of visually impaired people, understand that they are no different from able-bodied people, and that many things can be done by themselves. At the same time, by sharing Huang Ying's daily life, she inspires more people, especially those with disabilities, with her open-minded attitude. Some visually impaired children will take Sister Huang Ying as a role model and aspire to enter university to realize their life values. Short videos are a medium for promoting mutual understanding between able-bodied and disabled individuals, and mutual understanding is also a form of integration. As long as everyone supports each other, we can go further. "Reporter: What difficulties do visually impaired people face in their daily lives and studies? Huang Ying: The biggest difficulty in learning is obtaining textbooks and literature, which is a cumbersome process. For example, a paper textbook needs to be scanned and proofread first to generate text, which can then be read using screen reading software. The whole process took a long time, and I attended classes with visually impaired classmates. Often, after half a semester, I haven't received my Braille textbook yet. I hope the publishing house can directly provide accessible format textbooks or books in the future, which is more efficient than us converting them ourselves. Reporter: What specific expectations do you have for an accessible environment? Huang Ying: Many designers of accessible products have left me messages, hoping that I can participate in the evaluation of their developed products. I will provide suggestions from the perspectives of users and demanders. For example, some manufacturers think that adding Braille to their products is enough, but I will tell them that they hope to add a raised QR code. We can obtain product information by scanning the code and achieve "what we see is what we read". Because we need to know not only the product name, but also important product information such as ingredients and production dates. In recent years, there have been more and more accessible products, and everyone's accessibility concept is constantly improving. We look forward to a more perfect accessibility environment in the future, such as Braille and QR codes on doorplates, which will make our travel more convenient. Luan Chemeng: I hope more friends can remind me when they see a car parked on the tactile paving; Seeing visually impaired people crossing the road does not require excessive attention, but guidance can be provided when needed. This kind of assistance in details is often particularly important. Reporter: Huang Ying participated in the development of a course on self-directed living for visually impaired people. What are the contents of the course? In what ways can we help the blind community better integrate into society? Huang Ying: I have participated in various training programs such as the "Golden Cane" independent travel training and the "Bright Home" mid course blindness training course. The courses I have developed include guided walking, mobile phone and computer usage, Braille learning, psychological counseling, and policy interpretation. On the one hand, we hope that more visually impaired individuals can bravely step out of their homes, as stepping out is the first step towards integrating into society. On the other hand, for the special group of people who go blind midway, their psychological pressure is generally greater. We hope to provide training to help them regain hope in life and tell them that life that cannot be seen can also be equally exciting. Reporter: What are your plans for the future? Luan Chemeng: After several years of getting along, we have become good friends who talk about everything. I have come into contact with many disabled people through Huang Ying, and their spiritual strength has greatly touched me. In the future, I want to work together with Huang Ying to contribute to the cause of people with disabilities. Huang Ying: We are not only roommates, but also comrades in arms who strive together. Let's make short videos together, call on more people to pay attention to accessible facilities, and promote the improvement of accessible environments. The road ahead is still long, but I believe that as long as we support each other, we can go further. I also want to say to all visually impaired friends, don't let your vision limit your imagination, use your heart to perceive the world, and strive to live a colorful life.
